Using all natural materials, Helen Matoush's free-form style creates a unique piece of art from every gourd she hand selects. From the tiniest mini-gourd to an amazingly large mega-gourd, the individual personality of each dictates where she cuts, how she stains, and what materials she adds to transform each into a masterpiece.
Staying true to keeping each piece natural in origin, Helen searches for unique pieces of nature to use in her projects. Seeds, pods, leaves, fibers, stones, crystals, twigs, pine needles, metals, paper and many other items have been incorporated in her artwork. Many of these materials are suggestive of the wildlife and people of the desert southwest as well as Joshua Tree National Park. Local flora and fauna as well as art forms left by prehistoric peoples often appear in her gourds.
Helen's art reaches back to early craft techniques and brings a bit of the past into the present. Helen offers art pieces that possess that connection and in each piece a hint of the past is easily seen.
