Joshua Tree artist Karine Swenson was born in Rapid City, South Dakota and lived much of her adult life in the mountains of Colorado. Swenson earned her BA at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD and also studied at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.

She works in oil, watercolor and pastel and although probably best known for her realistic style of portraying the Jack Rabbit, Karine also paints absctactly.

Nature plays a strong role in influencing her use of color as well as her choice of compositional elements. The desert landscape wiht it's textures, colors and worn edges have entered into her visual repertoire. The expressive qualities of color hold an endless fascination.
